Make a Dorset Button Ornament
Beginner friendly!
Service Description
Dorset buttons are a traditional type of handmade button made by working simple stitches in thread around a ring. This style of button originated in the English county of Dorset, remaining popular until 1850, after which it was overtaken by machine-made buttons from factories. Instructor Rebecca Heid is dedicated to keeping this fiber art tradition alive. She will expertly guide you through creating a lovely beaded Christmas tree or angel design, which can then become an ornament, pendant, pin, or decorative accent on a pillow, barrette, or headband. So many possibilities! No prior experience is needed—bring your enthusiasm and a willingness to craft something unique! Our instructor is Rebecca Heid, and she is passionate about fiber arts and loves sharing that passion with others. She has taught classes for the Chattanooga Fiber Arts Guild and will be teaching Kumihimo and Dorset Buttons at Scenic Stitches Fiber Fest and Birchwood Fiber Festival this spring. She instructs older preschoolers twice a week at LMPC’s Mother’s Day out program, where she introduces many crafts that encourage sewing, weaving, and other fine motor skill training. She also teaches the Nimble Thimble’s enrichment class on Monday evenings at Ingleside, incorporating various skills from Kumihimo to crochet. She finds it so rewarding to see their enthusiasm for these crafts!
